Public Works - Sewer Department

What we do:

The Town of Pittsford Sewer Department’s staff of 9 provides support services regarding construction, operation and maintenance of the Town’s sewer systems and drainage network. Sanitary sewer service is available to about 70% of the Town. Those not serviced by public sewers utilize privately owned septic systems that fall under the jurisdiction of the Monroe County Health Department.

Under the direction of the elected Town Board, the Pittsford Sewer District operates and maintains about 250 miles of sanitary and storm transmission main and over a dozen pump stations. In addition, the staff is actively engaged in reviewing and monitoring the design of new utilities, inspection of their construction, and planning for the Town’s future needs. Sanitary sewage is eventually conveyed to a series of interceptors maintained by Monroe County Pure Waters where is then treated at the Frank E. VanLare Wastewater Treatment plant on the shore of Lake Ontario.

Plumbing contractors, firms or corporations conducting the business of sewer installation, alteration or repairs within the Town are required to obtain an annual plumbing license from the Building Department prior to conducting such business. State and local regulations apply to all sewer work done within the Town of Pittsford. Sewer permits, which must be obtained from the Sewer Department, are required for any repairs or connections to Sanitary and Storm lines.

Crews are available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, for emergency service and repair of underground sanitary and stormwater facilities. The staff is also available through DigSafely New York to assist in the location of town-owned underground utilities when property owners are planting trees, setting fences, digging pools, etc.

Stormwater drainage networks that fall outside the road right-of-way are also administered by the Sewer Department. If you should be experiencing flooding on or near your property, please don’t hesitate to call.

Please contact the Sewer Department for information regarding sewer availability, entrance requirements, permits, inspections, and other sewer related issues.
